REBECCA HOBBS-BLOGGS

SOME OF MY PORTRAITS.

I want my self portrait photo's to look like this...

'Sir George Grey Special Collections,

I would like my photo's in colour however.

I have been looking at backgrounds, and I would like to use a white background and a black back ground.

PATTERN&&LINE

These are some experiments that I will be trying out over the next few days...

This is a self portrait by Vicky Thomas

I am going to take photos of myself in a piupiu and spin to create a windmill effect.

I also want to get photos of myself doing the poi and capturing blurred and frozen movement.

Today we experimented with light, DOF, shutter speed and vantage point.

The camera we had was a very shitty camera, no matter how much we changed the shutter speed and aperture, they all still looked the same...

when we tried to create a blurred picture, they kept coming out like this :(

We tried to adjust the settings to make it work but unfortunately we couldn't… so we moved on!

deep depth of field… I think it turned out pretty well…
(where everything in the picture is foccussed)

 shallow depth of field
(where only the subject is focussed)

 Vantage point.
(the relationship between the camera and myself was very close)

Vantage point.
(the relationship between the camera and myself is quite distant)

This is Jimmy Nelson…

He is a photographer who's work is based on culture and identity. Not only is his work based on maori culture, but also african cultures, native american indian, Ethiopia, Indonesia + Papa New Guinea, Kenya + Tanzania, Mongolia, China, Vanuatu and many more indigenous cultures. His photography is inspiring.

A quote by Jimmy Nelson.

I stumbled across Jimmy Nelson's work on the internet. His work caught my attention as it is exactly what iv'e been looking for! His work is what I would like to direct my work towards. I have found my artist model!

RESPONSE: to be quite honest, I am not very good at photography (as you can tell by the photos i had taken). When i look at photo's other people had taken, they looked way better than my own. I would much rather take photos on my iPhone, as i'm not to confident using photography camera's. However, i'm starting to get better at understanding things to do with photography.

For this Photo we used the gold reflector to reflect the sunlight on to Chas's face (shallow depth of field).

This is a photo taken in direct light (the sun).

This is a photo taken with diffused light.

Chas took this photo of me, with the help of a reflector.

Direct sunlight.

TO DO...

This is me performing with my kapa haka group in my final year of high school. Kapa haka is a passion of mine and I would really like to incorporate it in my art work. Pete mentioned an idea of collecting/taking photos of myself performing Kapa Haka and/or wearing a kapa haka uniform. These photos were taken my family and friends in march 2013.

REBECCA HOBBS-RESEARCH

My favorite way to…
My favourite way to do any art is making sure I have a clear idea of what I want it to turn out like. If I don't plan or if it doesn't turn out how I want it to, then I more then likely will want to get rid of it!

I am a…
a young individual who is obsessed with my Maori culture, especially KAPA HAKA! It's my passion and I tend to pull distinctive Maori icons, designs and culture into my art work.

The challenge is…
The challenge is trying to find something about photography that is interesting for myself. I find it hard to be interested at all in photography, so the challenge for me this year, is to turn that around, and make it enjoyable for myself.

Not a day goes by without…
Talking to my boyfriend. I KNOW, HOW TYPICAL, but it's the truth.

Am I
am I able to pull my head together for this diploma? I think so!

My work is about…
Culture! Race issues as I am a white Maori! I like to involve my culture in to my art as much as possible. It helps me keep motivated and interested.

THESE ARE PHOTOS THAT CAPTURE MY INTERESTS!

11 MARCH

we experimented with the camera settings today. For frozen movement we had to increase the shutter speed to 1/200 and the f-stop was 8.0.
We also created a blurred isolated object, to do that we decreased the shutter speed.

we couldn't focus the camera to where the background was blurred and katarina was focused. In order to achieve that we had to zoom right in to the background and place katarina in the middle.
